Does gearbox oil even need changing — they say it’s “lifetime” fill?

In practice “lifetime” means the period the unit is designed for, not forever. Gearbox oil loses its properties over time, and this is especially noticeable with automatics. Skipping the change is one of the common reasons a gearbox fails prematurely, and repairing it is incomparably more expensive than a scheduled oil change.

How much does a gearbox oil change cost?

It depends on the gearbox type. A manual gearbox oil change is 1 499 CZK for labour (excluding oil and parts). A complete automatic gearbox oil change is from 4 999 CZK (the price includes parts, up to 29 999 CZK on some luxury cars). A partial automatic change is from 2 999 CZK. The service advisor will give the exact figure for your car, as it strongly depends on the model and gearbox type.

How does a complete automatic oil change differ from a partial one?

In a partial change (from 2 999 CZK), only the oil that drains by gravity is emptied and refilled — old oil partly remains in the torque converter and channels. A complete change (from 4 999 CZK) displaces virtually the whole volume and usually includes replacing the filter and pan gasket. Partial is cheaper and suits maintenance; complete is for when the oil’s condition is unknown or symptoms are already present.

The gearbox has started jerking when shifting — will an oil change help?

Sometimes yes, especially if the oil hasn’t been changed for a long time — in that case it makes sense to start with a partial change (from 2 999 CZK). But jerking can also point to more serious problems that an oil change won’t fix. That’s why we don’t promise a result in advance: we first assess the condition of the oil and gearbox and then tell you honestly what to expect from the change.

Just the gearbox, or is oil changed in other components too?

Besides the gearbox, oil is changed by schedule in the power steering, differential and transfer case — each of these services costs from 2 999 CZK. These components are often forgotten, even though their oil also ages. If the car is already on the lift for a gearbox oil change, it’s logical to check the others too — the service advisor will advise what’s relevant for your mileage.
